On June 19, 2016 during the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship (College World Series) the OICC is hosting Irish Fest 2016 at Omaha Baseball Village near the Old Mattress Factory at roughly 12th and Cass Streets. There will be food, beverages, Irish dancing and music! We are raffling off two airline gift vouchers! We have three awesome bands lined up for the event, Ellis Island, The Elders and Wild Colonial Bhoys! Ellis Island kicks things off at 12:30pm. The Elders will play following game 1 and the Wild Colonial Bhoys will play following game 2. Dowds Irish Dance Academy is performing at various times during the day as well. Film Streams and the Omaha Irish Cultural Center will present a special screening of the THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at 6:30pm at the Ruth Sokolof Theater followed by a panel discussion with with Dr. Lisabeth Buchelt, Associate Professor of Medieval British and Irish Literature and Culture, UNO Department of English; Dr. Barry Murphy, Professor Emeritus, Creighton University; and Douglas County Commissioner James Cavanaugh, Presenter for the Nebraska Humanities Council on Irish History. Pre-show entertainment, beginning at 6 pm, will be provided by vocalist Jill Anderson, who will perform traditional Irish ballads.

Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, director Ken Loach’s rich drama is set in 1920s Ireland, when workers from field and country were uniting to face the ruthless “Black and Tan” squads shipped from Britain to block Irish independence. Driven by a deep sense of duty and a love for his country, Damien (Cillian Murphy) abandons his burgeoning career as a doctor and joins his brother, Teddy (Padraic Delaney), in a dangerous and violent fight for freedom. After both sides finally agree to a treaty to end the bloodshed, civil war erupts among Irish factions. Families, who fought the British side by side, find themselves pitted against one another as sworn enemies.

Brigit Saint Brigit Theatre Company Presents “Rising—A One Act” adapted by Lisabeth C. Buchelt and Barry Murphy. “Rising” is a play that captures the reality and the confusion of the Irish Rebellion, along with the poignancy of the heroic spark that ignited Ireland’s march to independence from Britain that was the Easter Rising of 1916. The performance will be followed by a talkback with the cast.
“Rising” is directed by Cathy Kurz, the artistic director of the Brigit St Brigit Theatre Company. The cast includes Eric Griffith as The Witness; Lisabeth C. Buchelt as An Chailleach; and Barry Murphy as The Poet.
Doors open at 11:00 AM. Seating is limited.
The Omaha Irish Cultural Center is proud to announce a night of Irish music as a fundraiser, featuring Stephen's Green with Darren Crossey. Stephen's Green, comprised of Dublin natives Martin Doyle and Andy O'Driscoll has been playing and recording traditional Irish music for over twenty-five years. County Armagh native Darren Crossey will join the band bringing his guitar and banjo talents along with the haunting voice of a traditional Celtic balladeer. The show will be held at the Pella at Blackstone on Friday, August 7, 2015 with cocktails at 7:00 p.m. and music at 8:00 p.m. The Pella is located at 303 S. 41st Street in Omaha. Proceeds to benefit the Omaha Irish Cultural Center, Inc, a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation dedicated to bringing Irish Cultural to the Heartland.

Opening Friday, March 27 at Film Stream’s Ruth Sokolof Theater, '71 takes place over a single night in the life of a young British soldier (Jack O’Connell) accidentally abandoned by his unit following a riot on the streets of Belfast in 1971. Unable to tell friend from foe, and increasingly wary of his own comrades, he must survive the night alone and find his way to safety through a disorientating, alien and deadly landscape. Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times calls Yann Demange’s directorial debut ,“A tense thriller…that so adroitly joins physical intensity, emotional authenticity and political acuity that you may find yourself forgetting to take a breath.”
The annual Ancient Order of Hibernians - Father Flanagan Division's St. Patrick's Day Luncheon will be held at the Firefighters Union Hall on March 17th. This year, all proceeds benefit the Saint Vincent DePaul Society! There will be live Irish music and live Irish Dancing as well as corned beef sandwiches and Irish stew available for $5. Naas, County Kildare, is Omaha's sister city and we are fortunate to honor the Lord Mayor Emeritus, Timmy Conway, at this new event. He's traveled all the way from Ireland to join us. Plan to attend. Timmy Conway is both a statesman and a writer. In a political career spanning more than 30 years, he has served three terms in the Irish Senate and two terms as the Mayor of Omaha's sister city in Ireland, Naas, County Kildare. As a writer, he has published six poetry collections and three novels. Please join us for an afternoon of storytelling, evocative poetry, and prose. This event is presented by University of Nebraska - Omaha Department of English, the Omaha Irish Cultural Center, and the Irish American Cultural Institute.
General John O'Neill arrived in the United States from Ireland in 1848. He volunteered for service in the Union Army and served as an officer in numerous regiments during the Civil War. While distinguishing himself during his Civil War experience, O'Neill's historical significance arises from his service, beginning in 1866, with the Fenian Organization, whose stated goal was to create and support an Irish state independent from British rule. On June 1, 1866, O'Neill led a Fenian invasion of Canada with the goal of using occupied territory as a bargaining point for Irish freedom. The invasions would ultimately fail to achieve their stated goals and O'Neill was arrested by United States Marshalls upon returning to the United States. In an effort to advance Irish settlement in the United States and improve the living conditions of fellow countrymen, O'Neill led the establishment of Irish "colonies" within the United States. The area that would come to be known as O'Neill, Nebraska, was principally among these settlements. O'Neill died on January 8, 1878, and was buried in Omaha, Nebraska.

Max Sparber is teaching an introduction to the Irish language. Irish for Americans is a course that looks at the history of the Irish language, how it is used in Ireland today and how it is used in the US. Students will learn the five words every Irish American should know along with words used to describe family, for holidays, to describe Irish culture and even the language for drinking. On Monday 17 March, the Ancient Order of Hibernians is hosting a St. Patrick's Day luncheon at the Fireman's Hall at 60th and Grover. Lunch starts at noon and the charge is $10. Irish stew and corned beef sandwiches are available. The luncheon will feature live music from the Dicey Riley's (11:30 am - 1:00 pm) and Bradley's Bastards (1:00 pm - 2:30 pm). There will also be Irish dancers! Great fun and a wonderful way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.
“Look Behind You!” is a multi-media presentation by Belfast-born musician, academic and storyteller, Steafán Hanvey, which details how a father and son have negotiated the personal and political landscapes of Northern Ireland. A melding of image and voice, anecdote and memory, it showcases his father’s prize-winning photojournalism along with excerpts from his interviews with some of Northern Ireland’s best-known figures. These are contextualized by Hanvey’s storytelling, which comes in the form of critically acclaimed songwriting, and a trained academic’s gift for presenting complex issues in an engaging manner. The event is sponsored by the UNO English Department and the Irish American Cultural Institute. The event is FREE and open to the public. The Ancient Order of Hibernians has a great way to complete the parade by attending their post parade party. The party will be at the Old Mattress Factory at 13th and Cass immediately after the parade. The cover charge is $10. Corned beef sandwiches are available. Donnybrook will play from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm. The George Heaston Experience follows. There will be Irish dancers as well.
Omaha's annual St. Patrick's Day Parade put on by the hardworking Ancient Order of Hibernians starts at 10am on Saturday, March 15th. Parade route is up and down Harney and Howard between 15th and 11th Streets.
The Omaha Irish Cultural Center is hosting its Inaugural St. Patrick’s Day Gala on March 14, 2014 at the Paxton Ballroom located at 1403 Farnam Street, 2nd Floor. The Gala will feature live Irish music, traditional Irish step dancing by Dowds Irish Dance Academy, and information about local Irish organizations. The Omaha Irish Cultural Center (OICC) is holding a memorial service in remembrance of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 2013 at noon at Dundee Presbyterian Church located at 5312 Underwood Avenue in Omaha, Nebraska.
OICC spokesperson James P. Cavanaugh said “We are proud to be part of this effort honoring the memory of President Kennedy. His legacy of courage, eloquence and grace are an inspiration to all Americans and freedom loving people everywhere. We are honored to claim President Kennedy as one of our own. We invite all interested individuals and groups to join us in remembering President Kennedy and honoring the sacrifice he made in serving his country.”
The memorial service will commence at noon with a moment of silent remembrance followed by a presentation of the colors and a salute to President Kennedy’s service by local veterans and remarks by local Irish American leaders, a benediction by Revered George Sullivan S.J., and concluding with TAPS.
